YMCA of Western North Carolina is holding its annual Healthy Kids Day today, April 12, in Pack Square until 3 p.m. The YMCA designed the annual event to “inspire more kids to keep their minds and bodies active.” This year’s event also marks the launch of the organization’s new mobile food kitchen and pantry.
Healthy Kids Day features games, inflatable bounce houses, information booths from area nonprofits including Asheville on Bikes and recreational sporting leagues, Mission Health’s Tooth Bus and dance demonstrations from Lake Eden Arts Festival. Cooking demonstrations and nutritional information are also available, both in the mobile kitchen and throughout Pack Square. Area food trucks are also on hand to feed hungry kids and adults.
The Healthy Living Mobile Kitchen is a 72-passenger bus that was converted into a mobile kitchen through a grant from the Walmart Foundation. Soon the bus will be making regular stops in communities throughout Asheville, Buncombe County and surrounding area as a way to bring healthy foods and nutritional education to children and families in areas of need. In conjunction with the Asheville event, a second Healthy Kids Day is also being held in Jackson Park in Hendersonville until 2 p.m. today. An additional event will be held in McDowell County on April 26.
Festivities continue until 3 p.m.
