Final Big Giving Day offers prizes to Give!Local donors today

Some lucky folks are going to win some pretty great prizes Tuesday, Dec. 15, according to organizers of Give!LocalMountain Xpress‘ end-of-year grassroots philanthropy project.

Here’s the deal: Donate $10 or more during the Big Give Day via the givelocalguide.org website, and you’ll not only get Give!Local’s fantastic coupon book (with special offers from dozens of local businesses), you’ll also have a chance to win one of these great prizes:

$500 shopping spree at Ski Country Sports
One week free tuition at John C. Campbell Folk School
Three-month membership at Beer City CrossFit
Adoption package (Dog or Cat) at Asheville Humane Society
Chiropractic visit at River of Life Chiropractic
Zip-line adventure at Navitat

If you want to enter without making a donation, you can do so by mailing in the print donation form, available in the Give!Local print guide. Just write in “No donation,” fill in your basic contact information and mail it to us (making sure the postmark is December 15).

Give!Local is a Mountain Xpress project to promote and facilitate end-of-year giving to local charities. The campaign provides a fun, fast and easy way to give online from $10 to the $1,000s. Donors can give to as many of the 30 participating nonprofits as they like and pay with one easy credit card transaction. Everybody wins — donors get free stuff (coupons, tickets, vouchers and other perks), nonprofits get new supporters and needed funds and local businesses get new folks coming through their doors in February and March.

Plus, one of the goals of the campaign is to help encourage a whole new generation of givers — children. Children 12 or under who give at least $5 (with their parents’ permission, of course), can get a kiddie scoop from The Hop and be entered to win one of these special kid-oriented prizes:

Six-month Book-of-the-Month membership from Spellbound Children’s Books
Kids bike from Motion Makers
Horse riding lesson from Equinox Horse Foundation

If you own or operate a business, it’s not too late to participate in Give!Local. Businesses can still offer goods and/or services as a perk to donors or help one of Give!Local’s nonprofits raise funds by providing a matching grant or employee match program, or by hosting a Give!Local party. Just email us at givelocal@mountainx.com to get involved. If you operate a nonprofit that would like to be considered for next year’s Give!Local, drop us a line at givelocal@mountainx.com and we will send you a reminder to apply next spring.

But mostly, if you want a quick way to help your favorite nonprofits and get a coupon book full of vouchers to local businesses and possibly win one of six great prizes, log on to Give!Local — on your computer or your smartphone — and make a donation.

Up next:

Give!Local holiday party, hosted by downtown Thirsty Monk. Thursday, Dec. 17, 5-8 p.m.

During the event, if you donate to a participating nonprofit through Give!Local, Thirsty Monk will instantly reward you with a free appetizer!

We share your inclination to get the whole story. For the past 25 years, Xpress has been committed to in-depth, balanced reporting about the greater Asheville area. We want everyone to have access to our stories. That’s a big part of why we've never charged for the paper or put up a paywall.

We’re pretty sure that you know journalism faces big challenges these days. Advertising no longer pays the whole cost. Media outlets around the country are asking their readers to chip in. Xpress needs help, too. We hope you’ll consider signing up to be a member of Xpress. For as little as $5 a month — the cost of a craft beer or kombucha — you can help keep local journalism strong. It only takes a moment.
