  1. Terry obviously reaped advantages through the struggle of her forebares in the fight for acceptance…to bad she’s not big enough to pass it on to other disenfranchised groups. Her bigotry is appalling.

  2. Sticks&Stones;

    Well Davyne, you must know Mrs. Bellamy pretty well since you seem to be on a first name basis with the Mayor of Asheville. I guess you know all about her moral character and can easily judge her as perhaps she may have judged others? I guess its easy to make assumptions when you don’t even know a person. Just because the Mayor follows a higher authority and stricter christian values than the progressives in this town doesn’t make her a bad person. Leave her alone.

    @stiks and stones:

    Assumptions? Ms. D’s comment appears to be based on several public statements made by the Mayor.

    Are you saying you think gay people are should be second-class citizens?

    “Just because the Mayor follows a higher authority and stricter christian values than the progressives in this town doesn’t make her a bad person.”

    Nowhere is the Mayor called a “bad person.” As for following a “higher authority and stricter christian values”, should this country devolve into a theocracy, that would be expected.

  5. I do judge someone who places themselves in a position of power. That is my right. That is the price one pays for seeking power. So no I will not “leave her alone.” She is a bigot.

    I judge a person’s actions as opposed to their and your words of piety. Terry isn’t acting very Christ-like in my understanding of Christ-like behavior.

  6. Since the genesis of this cartoon was regarding partner benefits…I’ll insert this fact. Dept if Defense is way ahead of locals on the issue.
    Their Survivor Benefit Plan,(which the service member pays into until death) includes the following designation.

    “Person with an Insurable Interest
    A member who does not have a spouse or dependent child when eligible to make a program election may elect to provide coverage for a person with an insurable interest in the member. The Department of Defense defines an insurable interest as “a natural person with an insurable interest who has a reasonable and lawful expectation of financial benefit from the continued life of the participating member, or any individual having a reasonable and lawful basis, founded upon the relation of parties to each other, either financial or of blood or affinity, to expect some benefit or advantage from the continuance of the life of the retired member”. If the election is for a person who is more nearly related than a cousin, no proof of financial expectation is required.’

    Exactly. The mayor gives up the right to be “left alone” as a public person in the first place, but when her “stricter christian values” impact those who might not share her values, then she needs to be called out on the topic.

    Nice on Brent. I find it hilarious that the MX cartoonist called out the mayor before anyone else at the paper.

  9. ASHLokel

    The cartoon is TOO LONG and not funny.

    I don’t see what the big deal is. If the issue was put to a vote, it would be over…most people living here DO NOT think that tax payers should pay for “life partners” or whatever you want to call it.

  10. Ken Hanke

    It’s always fascinating to see how individuals seem to think they can speak for “most people.”

    ATTENTION HETEROSEXUALS: LGBTQ folks pay for your tax breaks, social security benefits being passed on to your “spouses” and all kinds of other rights and privilidges you get that we don’t. YOU ARE THE SPECIAL CLASS. Why is it that the very folks who get treated so special are the ones crying the loudest?
