The two U.S. Senators who represent Western North Carolina released their first responses to Pres. Obama's job speech tonight, Sept. 8, before a joint session of Congress: Sen. Richard Burr pledged to "fully consider all of the suggestions the president laid out in his speech." Sen. Kay Hagan noted North Carolina's 10 percent unemployment, adding, "It is imperative that we focus on practical solutions that will gain bipartisan support."
Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC) took an hour or so Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 8, to visit with small farmers at the French Broad Food Co-op Farmer's Market, at least partly in an attempt to reassure them that proposed federal legislation to tighten food safety standards will not affect them detrimentally, as some first feared.
