Blueberries, anyone?

Blueberries take a little planning. Plant 2-year-old saplings now, and in about three years, you’ll have enough for blueberry jam. Raspberries and blackberries give a more immediate reward, as do strawberries. But if you want a real head start, get some tips from Sue Colucci, small-fruits specialist for the N.C. Cooperative Extension. On Saturday, April 4, at 2 p.m. at Reems Creek Nursery in Weaverville, Colucci will present a free workshop: “Blueberries, Brambles, & Small Fruits for the Home Garden.”

In a one-hour presentation, Colucci will discuss choosing your planting site, soil preparation, pollination guidelines, and pruning/care of blueberries and other small fruits. Learn how to plant your own edible landscape or start a home orchard. Learn how many fruits are also beautiful plants that enhance your outdoor environment. They’re also—of course—a joy to eat. And many are high in healthy antitoxidants. Get tips, too, on making jellies and jams, or freezing fruit for winter enjoyment.

The event is free, but please pre-register at 645-3937. Reems Creek Nursery & Landscaping is located at 70 Monticello Road, Weaverville. For more info, visit www.reemscreek.com.
