The new year came in like a lion today, Jan. 3, as Asheville residents woke up to bitter cold winds and snow. The winter weather was greeted on social media with a mix of trepidation and joy, as locals tried to drive on icy roads or sled down snowy hills.
Standoff on Max Street comes to a close
The standoff between Asheville Police and Lamonte Monsanto, 41, came to a close at 10:17 a.m., nearly 24 hours after police attempted to initially contact Monsanto. Police were called to the scene early yesterday to investigate an incomplete 911 call stating several shots had been fired from Monsanto’s Max Street apartment.

Buncombe Commissioners to consider incentives for Jacob Holm
At their first meeting of 2014 on Jan. 7, Buncombe County Commissioners will seek public feedback on a plan to give $1.12 million in cash grants to Jacob Holm Industries to help it expand local operations. They’ll also consider hiring 17 new workers at the Health and Human Services Department, as well as new zoning regulations.
Catawba Brewing announces revised plans for Asheville brewery
Catawba Brewing Company welcomed the new year with an update on its plans to open a second brewing facility and tasting room in Asheville. The Morganton-based brewery had begun renovations last summer on a building at 2 Fairview Road in the Biltmore Village area but city of Asheville officials put a halt to the project.
