Press release from the Jewish Family Services of WNC:
Rosh Hashanah meal packing and delivery to isolated seniors in Western North Carolina: JFS volunteers will pack and deliver around 30 Rosh Hashanah meals to Jewish isolated seniors or others who need a meal for Rosh Hashanah. 2019 marks the 20th anniversary of this service, which was one of the original functions of JFS when it was founded in 1999. Volunteers will pack meals starting at 9 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 27 and begin delivering meals at around noon. Meals will be delivered as far as Brevard, and the Agudas Israel Congregation in Hendersonville will visit JFS that day to pick up meals to be delivered in Henderson County.
From Tuesday, Sept. 24 to Thursday, Sept. 26, JFS Chef Rachel Kalin, who was recently named one of the top female chefs in Asheville, will be in the JFS office preparing a meal of chicken thighs, vegetable kugel (noodle pudding), tzimmes (a traditional potato hash) and apple cake (apples are a traditional Rosh Hashanah food meant to symbolize the coming sweet new year). Flower bouquets to go with each meal will also be assembled Thursday, Sept. 26, starting at 2 p.m.
Rabbi Wolff Alterman will visit the JFS Elder Club Group Respite Program at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 2, for an educational and fun presentation about Rosh Hashanah. Club members will eat apples and honey, which are traditional Rosh Hashanah foods. The Elder Club Group Respite Program is held Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and offers socialization to isolated elders and respite to caregivers.
