Press release from Asheville Community Theatre:
Premiering in Western North Carolina, Great Falls by Lee Blessing shines a light on contemporary issues such as the breakdown of the traditional family, intimacy and how we deal with life-altering decisions. Mounted by Mockingbird Theatre Productions (MTP), Great Falls opens on the 35below stage Friday, March 6, and runs through Sunday, March 22, with performances Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are available online at www.ashevilletheatre.org, by phone at 828-254-1320, or in person at the Asheville Community Theatre Box Office.
Great Falls, a winner of the Great American Play award, explores the relationship between a man lost in his life and his former step-daughter, a young woman at the beginning of hers. Both dealing with their own inner demons, they embark on a road trip across the Badlands to discover if their relationship can be salvaged. Throughout the trip, the compelling and complex stories of these characters unfold as they test how much they can trust each other, or if they can ever trust each other again.
The production features veteran Asheville actor John Hall and up-and-coming actress Audrey Wells. The play is directed by Chanda Calentine, who teamed with Hall two years ago in MTP’s production of RED, also at 35below.
“The playwright addresses issues within interpersonal relationships with great humanity, intense honesty, and humor,” says MTP producing director Hall, “which is what attracted us to the script.” After the performance on Sunday, March 8, a talk-back will be held with representatives from Mountain Child Advocacy Center and Our Voice. Literature from these agencies will also be available in the 35below lobby. Due to the serious themes of the play, Great Falls is not recommended for audiences under the age of 16.
