Press release from Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry
ABCCM is pleased to announce its 3rd annual Honor A Veteran™ event for Veterans Day 2022. ABCCM and Ingles will host a free catered lunch for all Veterans from 12:00-1:00 at the Veterans Restoration Quarters, Asheville in Buncombe County; First Baptist Church of Hendersonville in Henderson County; First Baptist Church in Brevard, in Transylvania County; and The Orchard Church, Waynesville, in Haywood County. Veterans, especially those who served in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts and women Veterans, will be honored during a short recognition ceremony at each location.
The event at Veteran Restoration Quarters, 1329 Tunnel Road features a talk by Walt Larimore, MD, an internationally-recognized family physician, award-winning medical journalist, and best-selling author of 41 books. His most recent book, At First Light: A True World War II Story of a Hero, His Bravery, and an Amazing Horse, is the result of almost 16 years of meticulous research carried out in museums, archives and military installations in eight states as well as in Italy, France and England. Dr. Latimer’s grandfather played a part in saving the famous Lipizzaner breed of horses from the Russians and the Nazis during WW II.
Event sponsors are HCA/Mission, Ingles, First Citizen’s Bank and College Hunks.
Veterans will have the opportunity to be connected with ABCCM Veteran Services of the Carolinas; to learn about the Veterans Restoration Quarters for male Veterans, and Transformation Village for women Veterans. ABCCM is excited to partner with churches and organizations in the surrounding counties to honor all the Veterans in the region. Our Veterans across the whole state and country have served, so it’s fitting that we join to honor their service.
Families and friends of Veterans across our nation and history will have the opportunity to place the name, rank, branch of service, photo and short biography of their Veterans on the ABCCM virtual Veteran Honor Wall™.
Veterans placed on the ABCCM virtual Veteran Honor Wall™ will be permanently displayed online, searchable by name, to be presented at events and locations across North Carolina. The Honorary Dollars™ will support the many Veteran Services provided throughout our VSC and VRQ Ministries.
Established in 2008, ABCCM’s Veterans Restoration Quarters provides 160 beds of transitional housing and 40 beds for emergency shelter and 50 units of permanent supportive housing for a total of 250 beds for men. Transformation Village has 10 beds dedicated for female Veterans – with plans to build a 26-unit apartment building only for female Veterans. Their mission is to create a principle-based environment and a comprehensive intentional residential program that addresses every area of restoration in the life of a Veteran experiencing homeless.
The ABCCM VSC (Veterans Services of the Carolinas) provides services for Veterans and their families within all counties in North Carolina. ABCCM VSC offers Veterans Employment and Training Services (VETS) where 450 are trained and 80% are placed into living wage career level jobs. The VSC programs prevent homelessness for about 320 Veteran families a year. Veterans HOPE program outreaches to connect with the chronically homeless. Veterans Call Center responds to 2000 crisis calls a month, bringing resolution to most cases within 4-6 days. VSC is launching a new program to bring awareness and address veterans’ suicide with the implementation of community crisis response teams.
