Old Fort Endurance Festival raises about $1 million for hurricane relief

News release from Camp Grier:

Following the successful completion of their first annual Old Fort Strong Endurance Festival, Camp Grier is proud to announce a significant milestone in its ongoing commitment to support the community of Old Fort, NC, after the devastation of Hurricane Helene. As part of a broader $2 million initiative aimed at rebuilding 50 homes destroyed by the storm, Camp Grier has disbursed its initial round of funding, totaling $321,000, to 11 families in need.

In response to this crisis, Camp Grier, along with Tanawha Adventures and Pisgah Productions, swiftly organized the Old Fort Strong Endurance Festival. Held on December 7, 2024, the festival raised awareness and funds through a 6/12/24-hour trail run and mountain bike ride at Camp Grier. The event also featured a vibrant atmosphere with multiple vendors, live music, and guest speakers from the trail running and mountain biking communities.

The festival garnered significant interest, with 400 participants (sold out) signing up within the first 72 hours, primarily from the Southeast. Participants committed to raising a minimum of $1,500 each through personalized fundraiser pages, leveraging their networks to support Old Fort’s recovery efforts. Prizes from sponsors recognized top fundraisers, with special awards for those exceeding $5,000 and $10,000 in donations.

The event welcomed renowned athletes, including:

  • Hailey Moore, Writer and Mountain Athlete
  • Anton Krupicka, Professional Ultrarunner and Mountain Athlete, 2x Winner of Leadville 100
  • Gordon Wadsworth, 8x National Champion Mountain Bike Racer
  • Jeremiah Bishop, Professional Mountain Bike Racer, 16-time member of the USA Cycling National Team
  • Brent Bookwalter, USA Olympian and NBC Sports Studio Analyst
  • John Kelly, 3x Finisher of Barkley Marathons

In addition to the $321,000 disbursed in this initial round of funding, Camp Grier has secured $120,000 in grant support to assist seven families with replacing vehicles lost in the storm. This additional aid highlights Camp Grier’s dedication to addressing a wide range of recovery needs and ensuring families have the resources required to move forward.

The journey toward rebuilding continues. Camp Grier remains steadfast in its commitment to stand alongside the people of Old Fort as they work toward recovery and renewal.
