Every year, in conjunction with the annual publication of The Rhapsodist, A-B Tech’s student literary magazine, the magazine’s editorial team awards the Helen Dehnke Smith Memorial Writing Scholarship to a Rhapsodist contributor. This year the scholarship was awarded to Magnolia Wilson, currently a student at A-B Tech.
According to English instructor Erik Moellering, the magazine’s faculty advisor, “the editors unanimously chose Magnolia’s work based on quality and skill. We hope that the scholarship will encourage future endeavors based on the clear potential Magnolia has to develop as an author.” Moellering adds that the editors welcome additional funding for the $250 scholarship, and that contributions to the fund are tax deductible.
The Smith scholarship was founded in 2013, and is named in honor of Helen Dehnke Smith, who is the mother of Asheville author Mark Gordon Smith and an accomplished writer and author in her own right. A-B Tech’s Smith scholarship is awarded in partnership with one given in her name at Alma College in Michigan, Mrs. Dehnke’s alma mater.
