The Suspect: Chris Isaak

His breakthrough hit was the 1989 song “Wicked Game,” boosted by a steamy black-and-white video shot by Herb Ritts.  A Washington Post review of last year’s release Live at the Filmore compared his voice to the late Roy Orbison, with Isaak’s baritone producing “darkly resonant tones one moment and soaring falsetto flourishes the next.”

Can Be Found: The Orange Peel, Tuesday June 21.

RIYD (Recommended if You Dig): Elvis Presley, Lyle Lovett.

You Should Go If: Dating women your own age just kind of feels like giving up; you selected your gym on the basis of mirror placement and favorable lighting; you’re really tired of saying, “Because Grandpa wanted a tiny diamond in his ear, that’s why”; All you want for Father’s Day is … someone, anyone, to take you seriously as an authority figure. Is that too much to ask?

The Suspect: Over the Rhine

The Ohio-based husband-wife musical team of Linford Detweiler and Karin Berquist has been making beautiful music together for 20 years. In February they released their 13th studio album, The Long Surrender, a fan-funded record produced by singer-songwriter Joe Henry.

Can Be Found: The Orange Peel, Saturday June 18.

RIYD: Cowboy Junkies, 10,000 Maniacs.

You Should Go If: You’re celebrating the summer solstice by watching an extra episode of Law and Order; why didn’t anyone tell you to bring a change of underwear to Navitat?; Hi-index lenses ROCK!; All you want for Father’s Day is … for you and your partner to renew your vow to never have children.

The Suspect: Cowboy Mouth

Led by drummer/lead singer Fred LeBlanc, (the band’s website likens him to the Tasmanian Devil playing drums like Keith Moon with a voice like Bo Diddley) this New Orleans group is known for their super energetic live shows. Audience participation is mandatory!

Can Be Found: Pisgah Brewing, Wednesday June 22.

RIYD: Barenaked Ladies, Hootie and the Blowfish.

You Should Go If: It really bugs you when people compare things to crack unless they’ve actually used it; your record for keeping a plant alive is eight weeks; social networking is just one more way to broadcast how much crazy fun your life is. All the time. 24/7. You seriously don’t even try; All you want for Father’s Day is … the complete works of Bobby Flay.

The Suspect: Cisco Playboys

This Asheville band plays honky-tonk and Western Swing with a little Cajun accordion thrown in for good measure. If you want to step back to simpler time while you’re two-stepping the night away, check out this classic Western-bop band.

Can Be Found: The Get Down, Friday June 17.

RIYD: Hank Williams, Dwight Yoakam

You Should Go If: The world is made up of two kinds of women: “misses” and “ma’ams”; the Historic Trolley is your preferred mode of transportation; you refer to the 0.15 acre behind your house as “my land”; All you want for Father’s Day is … a Moose Café lunch and a bottomless glass of sweet tea.
