Gallery Gossip

• BookOpolis is coming again! BookWorks in West Asheville is holding its annual exhibition of artist’s books, broadsides, original hand-printed posters and prints from Monday, Sept. 10, through Friday, Sept. 14. The exhibition is open to all artists working in any of these media. Several works will continue to be exhibited through December. Learn more at www.AshevilleBookWorks.com.

• It’s hard to believe that a serious nonprofit space could survive in a small town for 30 years, but the Upstairs [Artspace] in Tryon has done just that! Their board is already making plans to celebrate the gallery’s 30th anniversary in 2008.

• Quote of the Week: Concerning her lack of interest in participating in open studio tours, Black Mountain printmaker Porge Buck remarked, “My studio is my work space. I treasure its privacy. I have no wish to deal with strangers, sales tax, or liability insurance. If someone wants to see my prints, they can make an appointment.”
