Smart Bets: Xiu Xiu

Though, by name alone, Xiu Xiu sounds like it should be a band from China (in Chinese, a xiu is a terrace garden bar), the group is actually an art-rock quintet from San Jose. According to press, "The band's name is taken from the 1998 Chinese film, Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl. …The majority of lyrics deal with morose topics such as suicide, AIDS, war, and taboo experiences." Now, Hedgehog (which sounds, by name alone, as though it should be in a zoo) is indeed an indie-rock band from China. Kindest Lines is an electro-pop outfit from Louisiana. Go figure. This United Nations of a lineup lands at the Grey Eagle on Friday, Sept. 9. 9 p.m., $10 advance/$12 day or show.
