Alabama-native self-taught folk artist Michael Banks has a style that's both alien and familiar. "He paints images as they occur, willing to paint contradictory ideas within a single painting; illustrating the complexities of being human, the beauty alongside the darkness," says a press release for Banks' upcoming show at American Folk Art & Framing. "A jewel-toned angst comes shining through." The show, Experience, opens Thursday, Oct. 6 with a reception on Friday, Oct. 7 from 5-8 p.m., concurrent with the Downtown Gallery Association’s October Artwalk. http://www.amerifolk.com
