Asheville’s Twelfth Night party at MoDaddy’s

I am talking with a gold-beaked bird-man trying to focus my camera on a woman wearing a four-foot high feather hat when Louis XVI bumped into me and offered me a drink from the royal cup. Just another one of those interactions you have on Twelfth Night, or on the set of Dr. Who.

This cast of characters is kicking off the Asheville Mardi Gras season. The King and Queen have been chosen, the krewes are preparing their floats, costumes, tested tonight, will be refined or changed, and everyone here is in good spirits facing the rest of winter.

Asheville Mardi Gras is a group of local citizens that celebrate the spirit, fun and frivolity of the Mardi Gras season. Twelfth Night is the kick off for the season of parties and planning that lead up to the annual parade on Mardi Gras day.

This year they are offering memberships and have formed a not-for-profit Social, Aid and Pleasure organization. With no commercial sponsors, they are looking for members who want to have fun and support the fun. More details about the group can be found at their website.

Oh, and in a fantastic bit of theater, this year’s King and Queen will be getting married on Mardi Gras Day. We wish the best of luck to the royal couple!
