Cheese Pirates take over Music Video Asheville

We know it wasn’t a competition. Organizer and artiste extraordinaire Jenny Greer told us so. But still the awards were notable:

• “Best use of plastic tiger” to singer/songwriter/Band of Horser Tyler Ramsey and Studio South, for their “A Long Dream About Swimming Across the Sea” vid.
• “Best use of rollergirls” to about-to-take-things-by-storm indie rockers Arizona and director Chusy Jardine for “Colors.”
• “Best performance on stairs” to retro uke-abilly duo Mad Tea Party and director Skizz Cyzyk, for “Every Way.”

Plus the best video went to newcomers Ice Horse, for their “Cheese Pirates” video, which looks a lot like you might expect … and also not at all. Runner up was the Poles and director Donald Bailey, for the stunning “We Dine in White.”

The second annual Music Video Asheville, put together by the Future of Asheville Music advocacy group (FoAM) easily sold out its advance tickets. Folks stood in the aisles to watch the 26 hand-picked videos and mingle at intermission at Cinebarre theatres at Biltmore Square Mall.

For another report, check out the blog of Ami Worthen (uke shredder with Mad Tea Party).

If you missed it, don’t despair: Highlights will be shown at BoBo gallery on Tuesday, March 17, along with performances by some of the bands. The 8 p.m. event is also for networking: “We’re calling all filmmakers and musicians to come and connect with each other,” reads the event description.“Need someone to make a video for your band? Want to make a music video for your favorite Asheville band? Appreciate Asheville music? This is the place to hook up!”

I want to thank all of the musicians and filmakers for showing up and submitting their wonderful videos. There were really only about 5 videos that were excellent, the rest were average (and im just being nice about that). Nevertheless, the awards did not reflect on the real talent that went into these videos. Cheers to the real TOP videos…Stephanies Id, Buncombe Turnpike, AZ, Nights Bright Colors! Excellent work!!!

Wow, sounds like somebody needs a hug. Way to go Terry. Some people in this town are getting together to create positive energy and here you show up like a turd in a punchbowl. Boo to you and your negative nellie ways. I’m proud of all that showed up and put forth the effort. Thank you for keeping Asheville the best “ville” around.

Regarding the quality of the videos, I appreciated the mix of live footage, documentary style footage and videos. This is a local festival with bands on a shoestring. There’s no way I would expect all videos to look remotely professional.

Terry is just sad! Maybe if she gets help to Dodfindski her happy family will be at peace! Good luck Terry! Maybe put up some posters.

Wow, a social mixer with the likes of Terry…I’ll take my chances with an intestinal virus. Life’s too short to brood in your parent’s basement on a diet of sour grapes and crushed dreams. Unpucker your keister and take the first frosty flight back from Hoth.

While you crown the “real winners” with your staff of bitterness, the rest of the town will be busy creating something.

I would reiterate my earlier comment and just say that I hope the quality of the videos improve over time but also appreciate the lo-fi vibe of the festival. Music is a passionate subject and people should express it full-heartedly whether they love or loate an event.

Just to clarify, I think everyone did a great job. The last thing anyone wants is some smug d-nozzle, (insert Terry’s name here) stifling others’ creative efforts in the infant stages. Can you imagine the poor first-grader coming home to that environment. “Look I drew a pony!”, Terry’s Response: “that’s stupid, it doesn’t look like a pony, it looks like poop. You’re a loser”

lol, take it easy on Terry. She is just expressing her opinion just like the rest of you. That’s what makes this town wonderful.

Just a bit of info about the poles video “we dine in white”.
It was shot in 12X15 bedroom with a green screen hung on one wall.
No help from recording studios or production company’s just 5 guys a camera and some editing software.
Also the director of photography and editor is Dougal Bailey not Donald Baily.
