Elitist Bastards: There’s Always Time For Tommy

In this week’s Elitist Bastards Go To The Movies, Xpress film critics Ken Hanke and Justin Souther give fair consideration to new releases Takers and The Last Exorcism, as well as theorizing on the quality of soon-to-be-released films The American, Machete and Going The Distance. But the real discussion this week involves a trio of Ken Russell screenings, starting tonight with a special screening of the epic rock opera Tommy, followed Thursday by Altered States (the Thursday Horror Picture Show) and wrapping up with next week’s Asheville Film Society screening of Valentino.

The simian detractors will doubtless disagree, but I think young Jeremy has outdone himself.

No monkeying around, the guy is imaginative and creative.

  3. I pledge that if I ever start a record label, I’m calling it Simian Value Records. If Toby Keith can call his label Show Dog Recordings, I think I can get away with it.

I couldn’t have done it with out the support of the academy, my co-star or the lord Kong.

    Aw, shucks.

Great. Now he’s gonna get all puffed up and refuse to work for bananas,

God’s honest truth – I was eating a banana while I read that.

My professional charges are on a fixed scale. I do not vary them, save when I remit them altogether.

But if you feel like sending me a dub of that TOMMY print, I wouldn’t knock you back.

Last night’s “Tommy” showing was the first time I’ve seen the film. You were right, Ken, that was a mind-blowing film. And that is definitely the cleanest print of a picture I have ever seen.

Being The Who I was surprised it wasn’t about one click louder.

Thanks for bringing it to town and bringing it to my attention. That was fun.

Now it’s time for you to check out THE DEVIL’S.

All previous ribbing aside, I do like this film, and regret missing it, but my wife needed her Clooney fix.

I think that’s probably outside the realm of my technical prowess.

Left to my own devices I probably would have done that, but we were trying not to overwhelm the audience any more than necessary.

Thanks for coming. I’m certainly glad you enjoyed it.

I wouldn’t fault a man for making such a humble sacrifice for his wife, seeing as I would likely do the same thing if it was asked of me; but for the sake of rubbing it in – and the pure, selfish pleasure that comes from such things – you seriously missing one hell of a show/experience.

That said, I’m hoping my wife will be so understanding in the fact that I’m going to need my Machete fix this weekend.

I’ll save my thoughts until next week, but I thought THE AMERICAN was excellent, and a bizarre film to open wide.

Ken, how about that new print of METROPOLIS?

I dunno. I made my wife go see Tommy “one more time” when it turned out to be playing in the town where we were on our honeymoon.
