Friday forum recap

Although online for less than a month, the MountainX.com forums have become quite the internet hangout for our readers. Here are a few recent highlights:

Local
Are you using less water?Xpress news reporter Brian Postelle started this lighthearted thread about water conservation.

Fashion, Style & Shopping
Who is the most fashionable local celeb? — With an election on at home, a highly controversial war raging overseas and a looming disaster in our national economy, this thread examines the really important question of “Who around town looks the best?”

Music
Will 2008 be the year the Asheville music scene breaks into the national spotlight? — With plenty of local acts starting to gain national recognition, it seems like our local music scene is on the way up. But, is it just hype?

General
We’ve cracked 300 posts. How do we celebrate this? — Although the title is a little dated (we’ve actually cracked 700 as of this writing), this thread is filled with imaginative ideas to enhance the Xpress forums experience.

Favorite Homeless People — Light-hearted discussion of the downtown panhandling situation, or mean-spirited attack on the less-fortunate? This thread, started by Xpress regular Jason Bugg, may be our most controversial yet.

What is the biggest challenge facing Asheville in 2008? — Failing real estate markets, short-sighted City Council? Overdevelopment? Forum users weigh in.

Internet & Technology
Second life — Not the largest of threads, but it did launch the idea for starting a virtual Asheville on this popular MMORPG.

Outdoors
Good hikes for people who hate being outside — Have a favorite, easy hiking trail? Looking for one? This thread has you covered.

Pets
“Cat Person” or “Dog Person” — The eternal battle between pet lovers rages on. What began as a minor skirmish became a full-fledged war of cuddliness when users began posting photos of their pets. Who will win? As of this writing, dogs were ahead 3 to 1. But it ain’t over yet! Cast your vote here.

Of course, our forums are only as good as the people who post on it. Help us get interesting local discussions started by posting your own topics and chiming in on existing ones here.

We’re pretty sure that you know journalism faces big challenges these days. Advertising no longer pays the whole cost. Media outlets around the country are asking their readers to chip in. Xpress needs help, too. We hope you’ll consider signing up to be a member of Xpress. For as little as $5 a month — the cost of a craft beer or kombucha — you can help keep local journalism strong. It only takes a moment.

Before you comment

The comments section is here to provide a platform for civil dialogue on the issues we face together as a local community. Xpress is committed to offering this platform for all voices, but when the tone of the discussion gets nasty or strays off topic, we believe many people choose not to participate. Xpress editors are determined to moderate comments to ensure a constructive interchange is maintained. All comments judged not to be in keeping with the spirit of civil discourse will be removed and repeat violators will be banned. See here for our terms of service. Thank you for being part of this effort to promote respectful discussion.

Seeing as how you’re responsible for more than a tenth of the content on the forum, I’d say you’ve earned that title. Maybe I should make you a paper crown.

(Then again, at 142 posts to date, maybe you should make one for me.)

  2. Kriss

Every time I check out the forum I notice a whole slew of new members signed on. That thing’s growing by leaps and bounds. Good job, Steve!
