Hobo Film Festival tonight (July 5)

In case you missed the flyers for the Hobo Film Festival, here’s everything you need to know about the art-meets travel-meets-train hopping subculture, rolling into the Asheville Pizza and Brewing Company (675 Merrimon Ave., Asheville, 254-1281) tonight (7 p.m., $5).

The film festival, which includes shorts by rail riders and train-hopping enthusiasts as well as various independent-film makers, is the brainchild of locally based Agency Films — the company behind last year’s Asheville Rejects Film Festival.

The Hobo Film Festival, created in cooperation with the annual National Hobo Convention (held in Britt, Iowa, since 1933), presents “multiple short films and documentaries around the subject of train hopping” and considers its mission “to preserve the history of the American train tramp.”

Asheville Pizza is the first stop in the Film Festival’s vagabond-like tour, which roves through the South, Midwest and to the West coast before landing in Britt in time for the Aug. 9-12 Hobo Convention.

If you miss tonight’s show, stop by the New French Bar Courtyard Cafe (12 Biltmore Ave., Asheville, 225-6445) tomorrow (Friday, July 6) for a rock and roll music and films event to benefit the Film Festival. It starts at 9 p.m. and costs $6.
