Asheville-based Dogwood Alliance will be partnering with Canadian band The Duhks at the band’s Orange Peel show Thursday. On Friday, two local outfits help spread the word about North Carolina’s new ban on plastic bottles in landfills at a show at the Emerald Lounge.

On The Duhks:

“They are one of the greenest bands we have come across,” writes Scot Quaranda of the Dogwood Alliance. His group was introduced to the band a few years back after launching its Greening the Music industry initiative, a campaign to reduce the packaging associated with music (that a lot of labels were unknowingly getting from endangered Southern forests, Quaranda says). “Our goal was to get the biggest labels to stop sourcing from these places and increase post-consumer recycled comment … the Duhks were one of the first bands on board, and since then both Sony Home Entertainment and Universal Music Group have made commitments to use more recycled and stop buying from the special places in our region. We couldn’t have done it without the support of bands like the Duhks.”

The band has its own green initiative, too: GreenDuhks.com. That campaign focuses on saving electricity, using high-efficiency, low-power lighting, and conserving water. Additionally, they are touring North America in a biodiesel van.”

Check out The Dogwood Alliance blog on the event.

A little bit more about the band, from their publicist: “The Winnipeg, Manitoba-based Duhks have always gravitated towards traditional roots-based song structures, but they’ve never stopped evolving since their inception five years ago. Due in part to a collective musical worldview that knows no boundaries, that evolution led the band to their latest offering Fast-Paced World, the first Duhks record to feature wunderkinds Sarah and Christian Dugas (replacing vocalist Jessee Havey and percussionist Scott Senior respectively). It’s an album that reflects the quintet’s newfound confidence, with Sarah bringing five original songs to the band’s encyclopedic collection of originals and covers both old and new.”

The Emerald Lounge show on Friday, Oct. 9, will feature Kung Fu Dynamite and Fifth House, teaming up to spread awareness of the state’s recent ban on plastic bottles in landfills.

“We have an exciting new partnership with RE3.org, promoting awareness of the new NC landfill plastic bottle ban [that started Oct. 1],” writes Kelly Hannah, guitarist for the band Kung Fu Dynamie. “RE3.org is teaming up with local bands throughout North Carolina to promote awareness of the new ban at clubs throughout the state. RE3.org will have a booth set up at the venue to help spread the word and the cause. … In addition to the RE3.org campaign, it is an exciting event for Kung Fu Dynamite. The band has a new lineup and we are sounding better than ever. Over the summer, we decided to take the band in another direction and we are very excited about the way things are sounding and the chemistry that we have developed within the band.”

The world is getting drunk on green koolaid. What are the green nurses doing, the green auto mechanics, the green morticians, the green accountants? These people are driving all over the place consuming energy resources putting on shows that people have to travel to attend. Let’s suppose each persdon attending consumes at least the energy equivalent of one gallon of gasoline and a couple thousand people a week travel to see them. How green is it to lift yourself up and contribute to the consumption of 100,000 gallons of fuel a year in order to play the minstral? That is just a start down this road of foolishness. What are we replacing the pet bottles with? Glass? Try selling that energy intensive industry to a cap and trade crazy green movement. How about paper? Well, the green drunkards have been trying to shut down the cupstock manufacturers in Canton AND every where else for a couple of decades.

Seriously, how about they stop producing CDs and put all their music on-line. Oh oh … do any of these green nuts understand how much energy and “pollution” is involved in the manufacture of circuit boards?

Well, of course, they are artists and they cannot be among the cream if they do not hop on the bandwagon.

My guess is that Trav is @ both The Duhks and Kung Fu Dynamite shows this weekend…get a clue. at least something is being said about this move. We could just go on ignoring the problems we have as a society, or, we could make jest @ every attempt to enlighten the unlightened and quit acting like an ASSHOLE. Any attempt is better than just mocking the efforts of people trying to make a difference.

Also, pfff, how come trav didn’t get “self-proclaimed” tags?

that only works for actual ‘self-described anarchists’, not just someone who sounds like one, i think.
