Local b-boys on the move

Since 2003, Asheville-based b-boy dance outfit Hunab Kru has hosted weekly training and free-for-all sessions at the Stephens-Lee Recreation Center. Along the way, a new generation of local breakdancers has learned the art of the b-boy/b-girl.

Now the gatherings are coming to an end — or rather, relocating. Hunab Kru will hold its final weekly Stephens-Lee gig on Wednesday, Aug. 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. Then, in September, the eight-member troupe plans to ramp up its training sessions and related events at the spanking new Hunab Kru Dance Studios in a leased south Asheville location.

Wednesday night’s open dance circle — or “cipher,” as the b-boys call it — will be free and open to all with a valid I.D. Organizers say that, pro or novice, you’re welcome to come hone your moves; or, feel free to take in the motion from the sidelines. If you plan to dance, wear clean athletic shoes and don’t be shy about bringing safety gear such as knee and elbow pads.
