Remember self-described “irritainer” Cookie LaRue? She hosted Xpress’ Best of WNC Bash in 2009, only to meet her demise (the Cookie character did, that is, not her performer Michael Sheldon) this past fall. Sheldon has relocated to Philadelphia in November. While based in Asheville, Sheldon ran LaRue’s Backdoor, a small but popular bar located in the back of the building at 237 Haywood Street that houses O. Henry’s. Sheldon (pictured below, at the bar) performed there, on occasion, as Cookie — those shows always sold out.
The following message was posted on the LaRue’s Backdoor Facebook page today:
“Hey Everyone, As you know, LaRue’s Backdoor is now The Backdoor. Michael Sheldon, AKA Cookie LaRue, has set out to begin a new chapter in his life. He will always be fondly remembered and terribly missed. The Backdoor, still under the same ownership as always, will continue with the same atmosphere and will still offer the same types of entertainment that have made this bar such a success for so long. There will be local and national bands, DJs and events like Gay Trivia and Piano Night.
“Any local bands or DJs out there who are interested in playing at The Backdoor are welcomed to contact me for more information. Thanks to everyone for all the years of support you have shown and thank you in advance for continuing that support in the future!”
The Backdoor is open Wednesday-Saturday, 8 p.m.-2 a.m. Info: 252-1014.

Does Cookie (of Late)’s remark mean that the reporter got her information only from Facebook and did not contact Michael Sheldon or the owner of the bar? Should her editor have encouraged her to contact sources, get quotes and research background before publishing this story?
Have to agree with Media Watcher. There is more to this story than just this press release or info written on the new Backdoor Facebook page.
