Pat and Alli’s Weekly Winners is on hiatus … but we’ve still got weekend music suggestions for you.

While local clubs are teeming with great concert options (Perry Farrell’s Satellite Party is at The Orange Peel; Kellin Watson and Woody Wood are playing a double bill at “a href=“http://thegreyeagle.com/”>The Grey Eagle), there are plenty of under-the-radar happenings as well. Check out these ideas:

• Conscious reggae and world-music artist Shimshai plays a two-show date at Namaste Yoga and Healing Center (57 Broadway St., Asheville, 253-6985) Friday, Sept. 7 and Saturday, Sept. 8. 8 p.m., $20 advance, $25 at the door.

Shimshai (yes, his real name) was born on the Love Israel Family commune in Washington state. Rooted in the Essene tradition, his music also imbibes reggae rhythms, jazz complexity and soul intensity, all fused with world-beat influences. Shimshai has lived in spiritual and natural hotspots like Northern California, Hawaii and Costa Rica, helping to form the burgeoning West Coast conscious music scene that includes his cohorts Tina Malia and Sasha Butterfly.

• Self-professed “Baby Beat” poet and spoken-word artist Thomas Rain Crowe performs a rare set with his band The Boatrockers at Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center (56 Broadway St., Asheville, 350-8484) on Friday, Sept. 7. 8 p.m., $5 for BMCM+AC members and students, $7 general admission.)

Kicking off their Thief of Words tour, this eight-member N.C.-based ensemble blends East and West influences. Selections include compositions by local songwriter Chris Rosser and Crowe’s translations of 14th century Persian poet Hafiz.

• Local nu-jazz newcomers Vertigo Jazz Project play Ed Boudreaux’s Bayou Bar-B-Que (48 Biltmore Ave., Asheville, 296-0100) on Saturday, Sept. 8. 10 p.m., free.

Vertigo Jazz Project is pretty hush-hush about their lineup (we know guitarist Preston Cate, bassist Patrick Thorstenson and drummer / DJ Sean Mason are involved) and history, but the band lists Duke Ellington and Wes Montgomery among their influences.
