See you at the fair

You might think you don’t want to go to the N.C. Mountain State Fair. The weather’s too muggy, you say. Too rainy, too crowded, too loud, not your thing.

But you might change your mind when you see Jonathan Welch’s photo gallery, starting with the glorious close-up of a funnel cake drowning in cherry compote. (As a former IHOP waitress, I don’t just throw around the word “compote.” This is the real deal.)

The state fair runs nightly through Sunday at the WNC Ag Center in Fletcher. Highlights? Pigs tearing around the hogway speedway, cowboys shooting guns from atop their galloping horses and the farm animals just generally being cute. You can also witness a bevy of award-winning, giant-sized vegetables, an array of antique tractors, a variety of fried everythings and, of course, the rides.

Check out Welch’s gallery here — you’ll get a real feel for the fair tradition. Click here for complete festival information.

I suggest going at night. It is a great place to take kids. I know fairs were the exciting part of my summers in W.N.C. Regardless of the mullets and muffin tops…it is a nice to see some old-fashioned fair action without the shock factor of Asheville intertwined. Sometimes you just want to see a 7 day old pie with a blue ribbon and a jar of jelly that no one will ever eat. If you grew up in the south, the annual fair outing is a given.

    Yeah,

Sounds good. Y’all have fun at the fair.
I’m gonna stay in town and rub armpits on North Lex – I just can’t get enough of it!

    CIO Y’all
