The Signature Winds woodwind quintet to play on Sunday

The Signature Winds, a woodwind ensemble from Sylva, performs works by Handel, Gounod (pictured) and others at 3 p.m. at St. Matthias’ Episcopal Church. The performance is part of a the church’s monthly chamber and classical music series, put on by the Asheville Chamber Players, an informal consortium of musicians. Ron Lambe, music director for the church, hosts this and other events at St. Matthias’, one of the oldest churches in Asheville (according to its website, it is the oldest historically African-American congregation in town).

The intricate woodwork of the chapel, built in the late 19th-century, makes for one of the warmest, resonant listening experiences in town. (For some stunning images of the church by South Carolina photographer Steven Hyatt, visit the site for his project, Churches of America.)

The Signature Winds ensemble includes Kathryn Alley on flute; Pat Stone on oboe; Charles Allely on clarinet; Mary Thomas on bassoon; and Stephanie Lyon on horn. The program will include “La Chiminee du Roi Rene” by Darius Milhaud, “Oh! had I Jubal’s lyre” from George Frideric Handel’s Joshua and Charles Gounod’s “Petite Symphonie” by Charles Gounod.

St. Matthias’ Episcopal Church is located at 1 Dundee St., off South Charlotte Street. For more information about the church, its history and the concert series, visit http://stmatthiasepiscopal.com. Donations for the concert are accepted to aid with renovations to the church and other expenses.
