This weekend on a shoestring

Friday, Oct. 23
• Artist Terry Walton presents her oil on canvas paintings (pictured below) at Studio Chavarria (84 Walnut St., Asheville, 236-9191). The open house/reception promises wine and hors d’oeuvres. Free, 5:30-8:30 p.m.

• “If It’s Too Loud…You’re Too Old!” says Christian/thrash group The Culvert (pictured). Catch the Asheville-based band at Gateway Christian Community (20 Integrity Dr, Asheville). 7 p.m., $5 suggested donation.

• Parlour Players presents DJ Tablesaw (old skool ragga, dub, dance, r&b) at Parlour (formerly Hunk Clothing, 9 W. Walnut St., Asheville, 253-4044). Music and local brews while you shop for clothing by WeSC, Skunk Funk, Gentle Fawn, Priarie Underground and more. 7:30-10 p.m., free.

• New Yorker Rachel Zylstra (below) is on her Southeastern tour. She stops at The Double Decker Coffee Company (41 Biltmore Ave., Asheville, 258-1001). 7:30 p.m., free.

• Americana trio DangerMuffin (pictured from Charleston makes not one but two local stops: Jack of the Wood (95 Patton Ave., Asheville, 252-5445) tonight at 9:30 p.m., The Town Pump (135 Cherry St., Black Mountain, 669-4808) tomorrow at 8 p.m.

• Boone’s folk/acoustic quartet Union County plays The Town Pump (135 Cherry St., Black Mountain, 669-4808) at 8:30 p.m. $5.

• Now You See Them, performers of “Super fun acoustic indie/folk,” will be at Fred’s Speakeasy (122 College St., Asheville, 281-0920). Local bluegrass/acoustic group Silver Dagger shares the bill. 10 p.m., $5.

Saturday, Oct. 24
• Local electronica/experimental project Thunderdrums kicks off the free, all-day Just Because You’re Asheville celebration on Lexington Ave. near the I-240 overpass. Other performers include Galactic (pictured), Dubconscious, Larry Keel and more. 1 p.m.

• Have fun, do good for the planet. 350 Asheville  celebrates an International Day of Climate Action to dramatize the need to reduce carbon levels in the atmosphere from the current 387 parts per million, to a safer level of 350. Meet in front of City Hall (downtown Asheville) for speakers, kids’ eco-activities and a giant action photo. 2-3 p.m.

• Bluegrass and barbeque is a balanced meal, right? Local band Branded Heart plays for the dinner crowd at The Fiddlin Pig (28 Tunnel Rd., Asheville, 251-1979). 6:30 p.m., no cover.

• Astrologer/musician Jozef “Jotown” Slanda performs in the Railroad Library at the Flood Gallery(2nd Floor Phil Mechanic Studios, 109 Roberts St., Asheville, 254-2166). According to press for the event, “Jozef’s alernative/acoustic originals combine timely poetic insights and soulful vocals honed through years of experience working as both a solo performer and backing up several Motown and R&B legends.” 7-10 p.m., $5 suggested donation.

• Knoxville-based ambient/metal group Generation of Vipers (pictured) shares a bill with U.S. Christmas and Shadow Of The Destroyer at Static Age Records (82-A N. Lexington Ave., Asheville, 254-3232). $8 p.m., $5.

• Blues musician Evan Wade is a one-man band. On his MySpace site he lists his band members as “Voice, Hands & Feet.” What he accomplishes with an electric guitar, kick drum and cymbal is pretty gritty and authentic. Check him out at The Corner Pocket (389 Merrimon Ave., Asheville, 258-9828). 9 p.m., tips.

• Finish out the evening at Mo Daddy’s (77 Biltmore Ave., Asheville, 258-1550) with mellow indie-pop from Portland’s Caught in Motion. They join The Cheeksters and Saint Solitude. 9:30 p.m., $5.

    Thanks for the mentions Alli but I don’t think Fred’s will be open by the 23rd. We’ve had no official confirmation or denial yet, but we’ve heard that the floor’s not even laid yet.
