Friday, Feb 5
• “Catch a buzz with the Bees,” says Blues rockers Erika Jane & Remember the Bees, who welcome the weekend with a performance at Highland Brewing Company (12 Old Charlotte Hwy., Asheville, 299-3370). Brewery tours and tasting room at 4 p.m., music begins at 5 p.m. Tips.

• Echo Gallery at Biltmore Park (8 Town Square Blvd., Asheville, 687-7761) hosts a reception for works by member artists (painters Genie Maples, Barbara Fisher, Susan Finer and Cindy Walton; ceramic artist Lori Theriault, textile artist Susan Webb Lee, photo artist Laurie McCarriar and ceramic sculptor Anna Koloseike) and guest artists (clay artists Dawn Dalto and Jenny Mastin, furniture maker Brian Fireman and blacksmith/metal artist Tekla). The show runs through March 21; the reception is held from 5-8 p.m. Echo donates 5-percent of all sales to MANNA FoodBank.

• Bluegrass band FreeGrass Revival will be at Straightaway Cafe (1772 Hwy 9 South, Black Mountain, 669-8856) at 6 p.m. Free.

• Bluegrass/gospel quartet Copper KettleCopper Kettle plays the Feed & Seed (3715 Hendersonville Road, Fletcher, 216-3492) at 7:30 p.m. Free.

• Cabo Verde brings world music grooves to Zambra (85 Walnut St., Asheville, 232-1060) at 8 p.m. Free.

• Americana/worldbeat/singer/songwriter Miriam Allen returns to WNC. She and her Passionistas play at the Town Pump (135 Cherry St., Black Mountain, 669-4808) from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

• Marshall Ruffin has been compared to Ray Lamontagne, Tom Waits, Jack Johnson and Jeff Buckley. You decide at Beacon St. Pub (204 Whitson Ave, Swannanoa, 686-0006). 9 p.m., $5.

• Power-pop quartet Howlies make the trip from their hometown, Atlanta, to play Broadway’s (113 Broadway St., Asheville, 285-0400). 9 p.m., $5.

• Catch the Secret B-Sides at Emerald Lounge (112 North Lexington Ave., Asheville, 232-4372) with Foul Mouth Jerk and special guests. 9 p.m., $5. The theme of the show is either “Space” or “Fireballs through the walls.” Either way, it’s a winner.

• Knoxville-based Americana act Kelsey’s Woods will be at The Root Bar (1410 Tunnel Road, Asheville, 299-7597) at 9 p.m. $5. Says the band, “This is our North Carolina debut! Come see us in Asheville…and have a big time with us!”

• Local pop artist Saint Solitude holds a CD release show for Alive & Well Records release Journal of Retreat (with Knives & Daggers and Darien) at The Boiler Room (11 Grove St, Asheville, 505-1612). 9:30 p.m., $5.

• Surf rock extravaganza: dancers Go-Go Underground perform with local band The Surf Church. The band would like you to know that they are “NOT Beach Boy music…. classic edgy 60’s reverb guitar instrumentals. Anyone familiar with Dick Dale, the Ventures, and of course the Pulp Fiction soundtrack will recognize the genre.” So there. 10 p.m. at Fred’s (122 College St., Asheville, 281-0920). $3.

• Indie rockers Grammer School play Mike’s Side Pocket (375 Haywood Rd., West Asheville, 281-3096) at 10 p.m. Free.

Saturday, Feb. 6
• WiseChild (the trio version of Fireseed) performs Celtic music for dancing at Féile Bríd ~ Festival of Brighid (2 Westwood Pl., West Asheville, 505-3368). About the event: “This is a community event to celebrate the Celtic goddess & saint, Brighid, and to celebrate the return of Spring. The festival will include the sharing of songs & poetry, a potluck feast, a candlelighting ceremony and fire spinning.” 6 p.m., free/donations.

• Jazz guitarist Dan Keller performs at Chameleon Soul Food (333 Merrimon Ave., Asheville, 255-2303) 6 p.m.

• Weaverville duo The Twilight Broadcasters will be at The Well-Bred Bakery (26 North Main St., Weaverville, 645-9300). 7 p.m.

• Brooklyn’s folk/blues duo Scrapomatic (A.K.A. “The Great American Music Machine”) are currently tourning the Southeast. They played Jack of the Wood last weekend and will circle back around to perform at Pisgah Brewery (150 Easide Dr., Black Mountain, 669-0190) on Saturday. 8 p.m. $5.

• Gas House Mouse puts in a set at Tall Gary’s College Street Pub (4 College St., Asheville, 232-0809)

• Wilmington’s socio-political troubadours The Fustics stop off at The Back Room (2702 Greenville Hwy., Suite C, Flat Rock, 697-6828) for a 9 p.m. show.

• Indie duo The Stereofidelics will be at Mo Daddy’s (77 B Biltmore Ave., Asheville, 258-1550). 9 p.m.

• Peggy Ratusz & Daddy Longlegs bring soulful blues to Tressa’s (28 Broadway St., Asheville, 254-7072). 9 p.m.

• Gypsy jazz group One Leg Up returns to the Westville Pub (777 Haywood Rd., West Asheville, 225-9782). 9:30 p.m., $5.

    Can you imagine if the Village Voice featured nothing but rap? I understand we’re in the mountains, ya da ya da ya da but how many Americana bands does one have to hear before they’ve heard it all? How about some modern jazz, electronica, hip hop or metal for that matter?

    Oh, and Asheville’s own DJ football with foul Mouth Jerk and TopR at emerald lounge feb 5th and feb 13th.
