This weekend on a shoestring

Thursday, Feb. 25
• Mixed media artist and sculptor Loren Schwerd gives a lecture as part of The UNC Asheville Craft Studies Program‘s Meet the Maker series. Schwerd’s solo exhibit, Mourning Portrait, features a series of memorials to the communities of New Orleans that were devastated by the flooding which followed Hurricane Katrina. (It’s on display through Friday, Mar. 26 at the Center for Craft, Creativity, and Design in Hendersonville.) The lecture is held on the UNC-Asheville campus (1 University Heights, Asheville) in the Owen Conference Room. 6 p.m., free.

• Blues/Americana band Wiseapple plays a free show at Pisgah Brewing (150 Eastside Dr., Black Mountain, 669-0190) at 7 p.m.

• More Americana: Baby Cowboy takes the stage at the Boiler Room (11 Grove St., Asheville, 505-1612) with freeform indie rockers (and decided;y unAmericana) quartet Seawhistle and rockers The Big City Bangers. 8 p.m.

• Electronica act By Any Means Necessary appears at Static Age (82-A North Lexington Ave., Asheville, 254-3232) with Stress Ape and No Shoulders (pictured). 8 p.m.

• The Rex McCan One Man Band (pictured) appears with Now You See Them at Westville Pub (777 Haywood Rd., West Asheville, 225-9782). 9 p.m., $5.

Friday, Feb. 26
• Acoustic music duo Fireseed performs for tips at Well-Bred Bakery (26 North Main St., Weaverville, 645-9300). 7 p.m.

• Paul’s Creek Band plays eclectic upbeat old time and original music with an emphasis on vocals. The group, joined by special guests Green Grass Cloggers, stops by Feed and Seed (3715 Hendersonville Rd., Fletcher, 216-3492). 7:30 p.m. Tips.

• Atlanta-based tie-dye-wearing jam-rock sextet The Flying Oatsmen makes a showing at Tall Gary’s College Street Pub (4 College St., Asheville, 772-1489).  8 p.m., free.

• Local ska band Dr. DP and the TrainRunners performs in a Battle of the Bands comprised of UNCA student bands, as part of UNCA’sa homecoming festivities. Says the group, “Come out and support us if you like our music. Should be fun!” Softball field, 1 University Heights, Asheville. 8 p.m.

• Indie rockers Ivan the Terribles play Fred’s Parkside Pub & Grill (122 College St., Asheville, 281-0920). 9 p.m., $3.

• Atlanta’s indie/electronica band Nerd Parade shares the bill with Diocious from Gainsville and local headliners Broomstars (pictured), currently staging a comeback. At the Rocket Club (401 Haywood Rd., Asheville, 505-2494). 9 p.m., $5.

Saturday, Feb. 27
• Third time’s the charm: Shod My Feet will play a twice-rescheduled (thanks, snow) matinee at Firestorm Cafe (48 Commerce St., Asheville, 255-8115). Billed as Afternoon Delight, the 3 p.m. show is free. And there will be “yummy warm beverages and yummy warm music. If you bring 3 friends, you get a free t-shirt :)”

• Extra happy hour: Local songstress Nikki Talley will be at The French Broad Brewery (101 Fairview Rd., Asheville, 277-0222). 6 p.m., tips.

• Metal outfit As Sick As Us (pictured) performs along side Chivalry, Face Down and Faign at The Garage at Biltmore (101 Fairview Rd., Asheville, 505-2663). Says the band, “Confirmed! ALL AGES! Chivalry is coming to The Garage! Super talented heavy bands for an evening of quality hardcore entertainment.” 9 p.m., $5.

• Prog rockers Dashvara performs at Mo Daddy’s (77 Biltmore Ave., Asheville, 258-1550) with Actual Proof. 10 p.m., $5.

• The Brand New Life is based out of Greensboro and Chapel Hill and performs their own brand of world, jazz and funk. “The Brand New Life’s sound is fresh and unique, and their repertoire of original music is impressive and adventurous. Their work is appreciated by music lovers of many different styles and genres.” If they do say so themselves. The show starts around 10 p.m. at Westville Pub (777 Haywood Rd., West Asheville, 225-9782). $5.

• Up With the Jones from Chattanooga is the brainchild of two high school friends who shared “common influences such as Jane’s Addiction, Black Sabbath, The Beatles and an overall appreciation for Southern Rock.” Check them out at New French Bar (12 Biltmore Ave., Asheville, 225-6445). 10 p.m., $5.

    In Black Mountain Saturday night (tonight):

    The Wellhouse Band at The Town Pump. Not free, but definitely cheap! Mandolin-powered blues, reggae, and rock’n’roll.
