For many people, Lauryn Hill came into their worlds with her scene-stealing turn on Whoopi Goldberg vehicle Sister Act 2. In that film, all fierce and beautiful, she sang “Joyful Joyful” in a tiny scene that shouldn’t have amounted to anything but pretty much made the movie. And showed those who’d never heard of The Fugees — the hip-hop group Hill had been in since 1992 — that Lauryn Hill could sing.
Hill went on to have a solo career underscored by her acclaimed album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill followed by a self-imposed exile from public view. In 2009 a return to touring went poorly, but she made a number of appearances over the past year and in June she told NPR reporter Zoe Chace that she had plans for a forthcoming album.
The Orange Peel was informed a few weeks ago that Hill was considering doing a few club dates. According to marketing and special events director Liz Whalen, the Orange Peel hoped to book Hill for December, but with time running short they landed the January 9 date. “Everything she’s added except for this is all in the Northeast,” says Whalen. “I’m not sure why she chose the Orange Peel, but we’re thrilled that she did!”
All of Hill’s dates were planned for the next couple weeks — a short and sweet tour. But the singer hasn’t done anything in the way of a tour in the past 10 years so Whalen suspects Hill’s management knew the shows would sell quickly. They have. Want to see Hill in Asheville?
