Xpress is giving away two spots for the Asylum Street Spankers show Wednesday at the Grey Eagle. The eclectic roots ensemble is guaranteed Big Entertainment, with their wild live show that’s part string-band, part Vaudeville and all witty fun. Want to go? “The long running collective Asylum Street Spankers are an underground institution widely considered one of the most interesting and entertaining live acts working today.

Over the course of nearly 15 years the Spankers have released a diverse range of albums, thematically shifting from one of the most highly honored children’s album of the last five years, to EPs of explicit bawdy tunes, to an entire album about pot smoking and beer drinking, all the while musically mashing country, blues, folk, ragtime cowpunk and a heaping helping of humor into an inventive, musically ambitious show described by the Washington Post as an ‘Electrifying, mind altering experience.’

On their current run of concert dates, the group is without co-founder Christina Marrs, who recently had her third child. Rather than sit around Austin until Marrs was ready to hit the road again, the boys in the band decided to turn her absence into an opportunity to debut new material, revive some older tunes with new arrangements and experiment with stripping the show of every vestige of class it’s ever had. Dubbed “SausageFest 2009,” this male only version of the band explores the raunchier and rowdier side of the Spankers in a hilarious concert of great picking, great singing, heavy drinking and misdirected testosterone.”

The show is Wednesday evening at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12 advance, $15 at the door. Casey Driessen opens.
