Feeling overwhelmed by the whole “Asheville experience?” Maybe you could use a refresher course in local culture. And even though that’s not really what video blogger Hannah Rose Truesdell is doing on her ongoing vlog Asheville 101: The Life of A College Student in Asheville, NC, there are still a few locally relevant life lessons in her tangent-prone, eye-rolling monologues. Like “bring a sweater to college,” for instance.
Some things are natural matches: Peanut butter and jelly; movies and popcorn; cold fall mornings and hot tea. Other combinations are less intuitive, like cayenne pepper in hot cocoa. Yet the conceptual coupling of breakdancing and a kid-friendly ice-cream shop isn’t as strange as it may sound. Here’s local breakers Hunab Kru showing the kids how it’s done at The Hop.
Here’s a hint for you entry-level naturalists out there: If you’re sneaking up on an elusive waterfowl and don’t want to scare it away, it’s probably a good idea to whisper. The Great Blue Heron is a bird that can’t stand to have its mellow harshed.
When it comes to challenging piano pieces, the works of Sergei Rachmaninov are justifiably notorious for their absolute demand of precision and expression. In some cases, they’re too big for even a single performer, like “Tarantelle” (from Suite No 2, Op. 17 II. Valse IV) which requires two top-notch pianists and two pianos. And two other people to turn the pages of the sheet music, just for good measure.
