Video: Hockey at Grey Eagle

Portland, Ore.-based new-wave band Hockey played in Asheville last Friday. The band plays Coachella next month. A dispatch in film from our faithful correspondent Jesse Hamm:

“In the midst of a largely sold-out tour across North America, Hockey visited Asheville and played Friday night at the Grey Eagle. The band was in town to promote its new record Mind Chaos.

Despite lead singer Ben Grubin’s illness, the band took the stage for a rollicking set of music. Showing no discernible effects, Grubin put on an outstanding performance and commanded an enthusiastic crowd. The band’s performance was impressive for a group that has released just one disc to date.

Highlights from the set included the new single ‘Song Away,’ song with a decidedly ‘80s alternative vibe, making it worth the price of admission alone.The band played on and closed out the set with an outstanding version of ‘Too Fake.’

Hockey is garnering a lot of interest in the world of alternative music and they showed why.”

    “Grubin put on an outstanding performance”
    I agree 100% with this. If I hadn’t been told, I never would’ve guessed Ben was ill.
    He came out afterwards and I got to hang out with him for a bit, he was really cool even though I’m sure he wasn’t feeling his best.
    They all put on a terrific show, and I hope they’ll come back sometime.
