Smart bets: Andrew Scotchie & The River Rats

“Performing for friends, fans and family in my hometown is the only way I could ever imagine spending my birthday,” says Andrew Scotchie, local musician and founder of Leicester’s Barnaroo festival. “My dad, Tom Scotchie, died hours before my 15th birthday, so the 16th of January is always a hard day for my family and me. Music and good people have always been the best medicine for us.” In addition to honoring his father at the show, Scotchie says he’ll treat fans to new songs from his lively rock group Andrew Scotchie & The River Rats, ample special guest collaborations (David Earl Tomlinson, Jack Mascari, Noah Larssen) and, of course, cake — while it lasts. For his 23rd birthday concert, Scotchie has planned a musical sampling of the South, including opening sets by Charleston, S.C.-based “firecracker and very unique writer” Danielle Howle plus Cullowhee funk outfit Porch 40.     Andrew, My deep sadness began November 12, Tom’s birthday. and it goes on. We have missed so much, Tom lit up every family party and holiday
    gathering. He was a great son to me, I would go to work and Tom would come to me and say “Mom, I need a hug” and we would stand in the parking lot and hug. And I would say to myself,” you are one lucky woman to have a son to hug every morning” I always knew how blest I was. And he always wanted to be the kind of uncle that my sisters husband – Uncle Irv – was and no doubt about it, Tom was every bit the best Uncle the children in our family had. andrew you honor your Father with your great dedication to follow His dream for you. So my dear grandson I send my Love and a sadnesst hat still becomes almost unbearable for me and I know for you too. oxoxox
