Smart Bets: Craft City

Approachable DIY projects led by local makers is the focus of the Center for Craft’s summerlong Craft City series on the first Friday of each month through August. The kickoff workshop takes place Friday, June 1, 5-8 p.m., when Grace Gouin of Echoview Fiber Mill will teach participants how to make a mini-macramé plant hanger, using locally made, organic cotton lanyard yarn. Other series offerings include rubber stamp greeting cards with Eleanor Annand (July 6) and etched glasses and candleholders with the N.C. Glass Center (Aug. 3). Craft kits are $12 each and include all the materials needed to complete one craft, plus a voucher for a fully loaded hot dog (or tempeh dog) from Foothills Local Meats’ hot dog cart. craftcreativitydesign.org. Thanks for reading through to the end…

We share your inclination to get the whole story. For the past 25 years, Xpress has been committed to in-depth, balanced reporting about the greater Asheville area. We want everyone to have access to our stories. That’s a big part of why we've never charged for the paper or put up a paywall.

We’re pretty sure that you know journalism faces big challenges these days. Advertising no longer pays the whole cost. Media outlets around the country are asking their readers to chip in. Xpress needs help, too. We hope you’ll consider signing up to be a member of Xpress. For as little as $5 a month — the cost of a craft beer or kombucha — you can help keep local journalism strong. It only takes a moment.

Xpress is committed to offering this platform for all voices, but when the tone of the discussion gets nasty or strays off topic, we believe many people choose not to participate. Xpress editors are determined to moderate comments to ensure a constructive interchange is maintained. So Ed, you get paid to eat for brown-nosing the obnoxious tourists this way for cheap trinkets via ‘journalism’?
Wow. I need to quit my 3 jobs and get into macrame.
Rock that free press for important issues.
