Tinted under red light and swaying beside a shared microphone, Chicago-based singer-songwriters Sima Cunningham and Macie Stewart strum for an otherwise deserted room. While this scene from HOMME’s first music video (a cover of Julee Cruise’s “Rockin’ Back Inside My Heart”) illustrates the duo’s ability to build ominously intimate moments from minimal inputs, the women’s original material reveals an equal aptitude for rock’s grittier side. Both are credited with writing three songs on their 2015 debut album, which was featured in blogs by Live Nation and Consequence of Sound, in addition to catching the attention of British tastemaker Zane Lowe. HOMME’s online bio summarizes the musical partnership in even fewer words: “An experiment with voice, guitar and sound.” Stewart’s strings trio The Few opens for HOMME at The Mothlight Sunday, Jan. 17, at 9 p.m. $5. themothlight.com.
