Xpress seeks kids’ art and writing for 2016 Kids Issue

It’s time to get started on submissions for the 2016 Mountain Xpress Kids Issue!

Each year, Xpress highlights the thoughtful and engaging art, photos, essays and poetry of area K-12 students in a special issue, which also includes listings of local and regional summer camps. The deadline is Friday, Feb. 19.

Theme

This year’s theme is “Who Am I?” Kids, here are some ideas to get you started:

Tell us about yourself and your family. Where are you coming from? What makes you different? What are your best qualities? What do you need to work on?

What challenges have you faced in life? How did you deal with them and how have those experiences shaped the person you are?

Who do you want to be? What do you want to do with your life? How are you and your friends and peers different from your parents’ and grandparents’ generations?

(Theme doesn’t appeal to you? Students also have the option of creating their own themes.)

Submission guidelines

Essays
Essays should be no more than 350 words (though some exceptions can be made).

Poems
Short-form poetry is preferred, with poems limited to a maximum of 30 lines.

Art
Art should be digitally scanned, or able to be scanned by Mountain Xpress. Photos of sculptures are also permissible. Artists’ statements are welcome.

Photos
Photos should be high-resolution, digital photos, between 200 KB and 6 MB. (Cell phone setting of “medium” size.) Artists’ statements are welcome.

Deadline
The deadline is Friday, Feb. 19, to be considered for publication in the March 16 issue of Xpress.

    Now that is an upcoming issue I’ll be happy to read. Hopefully it will be free of partisan politics, pro development shills, New Age chicanery, etc.

    Even with such a ‘connected’ (read- can’t stay off their electronic devices) generation of children in WNC, those little ones still show us adults why we are eye roll worthy. Hooray for the (somewhat) tabula rasa.
