Another Asheville resident has had a frustrating experience trying to obtain a photo ID for voting. After a time-consuming trip to the DMV, and wrangling with poll workers at the Buncombe County Board of Elections office, 68-year-old Juliet Burke succeeded in casting an early vote in the primary, but she still lacks a photo ID.

Council approves planning process for Haywood Street sites; will demo former Sister Cities building

Asheville City Council approved a public visioning process to solicit broad community input on the future use of city-owned property across from the U.S. Cellular Center and the Basilica of St. Lawrence. Council also voted to demolish a city-owned building adjacent to the area at 33-35 Page Avenue. The building was the headquarters of the Asheville Sister Cities organization before the structure was condemned in November last year.

County Republican­s stave off property reappraisa­ls for now

County Commissioners deadlocked on a request from tax director Gary Roberts to reappraise county real estate in 2017. With Commissioner Ellen Frost absent, the board members voted 3-3 along party lines, delaying for at least a few weeks a decision on whether the county will voluntarily undertake a reappraisal before the state Department of Revenue forces its hand.
