AAAC names Buncombe County Grassroots Arts Program Grant recipients

The Asheville Area Arts Council is pleased to announce the results of the 2018-19 Buncombe County Grassroots Arts Program Grant. The Grassroots Arts Program (GAP) is a program of the North Carolina Arts Council (NCAC) that provides per capita-based funding for arts programming to all 100 counties across North Carolina, ensuring opportunities for citizens to experience the arts in their own communities. The AAAC is the official Buncombe County partner of the NCAC, a division of the NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

In the 2018-19 fiscal year, the AAAC was able to distribute $48,625 in funds to Buncombe County arts organizations.

Congratulations to the following 2018-19 GAP awardees:

• Asheville City Schools Foundation: $3,000 for Teaching Artists Presenting in Asheville Schools (TAPAS)
• Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre: $2,500 for 2019 Asheville Fringe Arts Festival
• Asheville Butoh Collective: $1,200 for Asheville Butoh Festival
• Asheville Community Theatre: $2,500 for the Avenue Q production
• Asheville Creative Arts: $2,500 for BUGS! First mainstage production written and produced by ACA artists
• Asheville Gay Men’s Chorus: $2,000 for 18-19 Season
• Asheville Music School: $2,000 for Sound Education Outreach
• Asheville Rhythm: $2,500 for 2019 Asheville Percussion Festival
• Asheville Writers in the Schools and Community: $2,500 for Word on the Street Summer Institute 2019
• Aurora Studio and Gallery: $1,000 for Visiting Artists Program
• Black Mountain Center for the Arts: $3,000 for facility mural project
• Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center: $2,500 for {Re}Happening
• Blue Ridge Orchestra: $2,050 for BRO Revels
• Cat Fly Film Festival: $625 for Cat Fly Halloween
• Flatiron Writers Room: $1,000 for Literary Agent Panel and Pitch Slam
• Immediate Theatre Project: $4,000 for Immediate Theatre Mainstage Production
• Hola Community Arts: $4,500 for Hola Asheville Festival
• LEAF Community Arts: $4,500 for LEAF Delta House Jazz Band
• Media Arts Project/Revolve: $2,500 for Photo + Sphere
• Montford Park Players: $2,250 for 2018-19 Season

The distribution of funds was decided by a volunteer group of panelists. This year’s GAP Panel members included: Lindsey Solomon, Capital Campaign/Development Associate at Asheville Art Museum; Jeff Santiago, Operations Manager at The Orange Peel; Jessica Trotman, Director of Planning And Development at Town of Black Mountain; James Cassara, Artists and former Elementary Art Teacher; Cherry Saenger (AAAC Board Member), retired College Professor and patron of the arts; and Michael Ebbs, published Photographer and VP Business Initiatives Manager at Wells Fargo. Each member brought varying expertise, and the AAAC thanks them for their time.
