AC-T: UNC Asheville in market for expansion

Here’s an excerpt from the Asheville Citizen-Times article:

UNC Asheville officials are in discussions they hope lead to the purchase of up to nearly 19 acres of the old Highland Hospital property for expansion of the campus.

The state budget approved by legislators last month includes $2 million for the university to acquire more land.

…The properties include the old Highland Hospital building at 75 Zillicoa St., a building leased by the U.S. Forest Service at 160 Zillicoa, and two nearby vacant parcels. …

The total appraised value of the parcels is nearly $7 million, according to documents obtained from the university by the Citizen-Times through a public records request. …

Pierce said the university, with an enrollment of about 3,700 undergraduate students, needs more space.

“A lot of the land we currently own is very hilly, wooded and hard to develop,” he said. “Our university and all universities are interested in buying contiguous property when it comes on the market. And so when these opportunities come up, we want to explore them.”
