Anam Cara Theatre Company holds casting call for “Pulse”

Press release from Anam Cara Theatre Company:

ANAM CARA THEATRE COMPANY seeks actors for Pulse, an ensemble-created musical performance, directed by Jenna Tamisiea.
Thursday, January 5, 6pm-9pm
Saturday, January 7, 12pm-3pm
All at Toy Boat Community Art Space (101 Fairview Rd., Asheville, NC 28803)
Performance Dates: February 24 & 25, March 3, 4, 10 & 11, 2017

ABOUT THE PLAY:

This ensemble-created performance confronts the issues that led to the 2016 Orlando nightclub shooting. Striking the heart of the LGBTQ community, this gut-wrenching crime poses many questions. Was this a terrorist attack? A gun control failure? An assault on Orlando’s Latinx community? Is there a master narrative that ties together these seemingly conflicting perspectives? Director Jenna Tamisiea will lead ensemble members, and then audiences, into confrontation with these questions through a provocative performance full of music, heart, and insight, drawing on personal experiences.

ABOUT THE AUDITIONS:

Please prepare a short 1-2 minute piece inspired by this quote: “Best of all is to preserve everything in a pure, still heart, and let there be for every pulse a thanksgiving, and for every breath a song,” by Konrad Von Gesner. The piece can be in whatever medium you choose — dance, song, poetry, monologue, pantomime, unconventional talent, anything.

After performances of prepared pieces, there will be time for ensemble work. Total audition will last no more than 1.5 hours. Times are listed below; note that auditionees must arrive by the start of the selected 1.5-hour time slot.

Email info@anamcaratheatre.org to sign up for your audition — please note which date and time slot you prefer. Walk-ins will be accepted, but priority will be given to those with appointments.

January 5th, 6-7:30pm and 7:30pm-9pm
January 7th, 12pm-1:30pm and 1:30pm-3pm

The play will be very musical, so auditionees should bring any musical instruments they play. A piano is available at the space. You do NOT have to be able to play an instrument in order to be cast.

We are also looking for musicians (who do not necessarily need to act in the play). Musicians should also sign up for an audition time. Musicians with songwriting capabilities and collaborative skills are strongly desired.

You do not have to identify as LGBTQ or Latinx in order to be considered for a part in this performance, though you must at least be an ally.

Rehearsals will begin January 15th. We are also still looking for a Stage Manager and designers. Please email info@anamcaratheatre.org if you are interested in any of these positions. Stipends available.

This project is funded in part by the Asheville Area Arts Council.
