Andrew Combs plays New Mountain, April 18

“Like a character in a dreary West Coast short story by Raymond Carver, Nashville songwriter Andrew Combs moves through a hazy modern world,” begins the musician’s bio. And while Combs is well-versed in country sounds — his song “Emily” is Exhibit A; his song “Big Bad Love” was sung by the character Ron Pope on a recent episode of “Nashville.” That’s Exhibit B. But Combs’ most recent album, All These Dreams, takes its cues more from “California-tinged AM Gold; the Laurel Canyon tones of Jackson Browne and The Eagles; and Paul Simon’s Muscle Shoals-laced R&B funk.”

The video for “Nothing to Lose” sees Combs without his cowboy hat, and with an achingly nostalgic (though not at all tribute-like) Jim Croche vibe.

Chances are good there be as much Nashville as Laurel Canyon in Combs’ Saturday, April 18 set at New Mountain. The 10 p.m. show serves as the after-party to moe.; Combs opens for Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers. $10.

Here, Combs performs the title track from All These Dreams as part of the Pink House Sessions series.
