Artist Stephanie Grimes demonstrates scratchboard at Haywood County Arts Council, Aug. 19

Press release:

Haywood County Arts Council’s Artist Summer Demo Days head toward Autumn with a very special event featuring Stephanie Grimes, a nationally known wildlife artist who works in a relatively unknown medium.

“About eight years ago,” says Stephanie, “I discovered scratchboard. Scratchboard has proven to be my favorite surface for the portrayal of wildlife and pets. It allows me to get very detailed, vividly showing an intimate, close-up view of a moment in time in an animal’s life.”

The scratchboard Stephanie Grimes works with is a hardboard panel supporting a white clay base coated with black India ink. She uses sharp instruments to scrape away the ink and reveal the white lower surface. The finished piece of art can be left in black and white or can be colored.

Though any subject can be rendered in scratchboard, Stephanie finds it an especially powerful medium for portraying animals and their personalities. Using scratchboard enables her to capture the density, highlights and textures of fur and feathers. Collectors prize Stephanie’s work for its expressive range, its immediacy and the dramatic sense of life it conveys.

If you love art—and animals—join Stephanie Grimes as she creates original scratchboard art at Haywood County Arts Council’s Gallery & Gifts on Saturday, August 19, from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. Share an afternoon with a uniquely skilled artist working in an unusually engaging medium. “Artists like Stephanie Grimes bring so much to these free demonstrations,” notes HCAC Executive Director Lindsey Solomon. “Previous Demo Days have featured leading local artists including Char Avrunin, Alice Herring, Denise Seay and Sun Sohovich. We’re grateful to all our artists for being so generous with their time and talents.”
