It Takes a Village: Collaborative Printmaking & The Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop

Phil Sanders, former Director & Master Printer of the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop, NYC will give an in depth talk on the history of the Printmaking Workshop, the legacy of Robert Blackburn, and collaborative print projects produced at RBPMW.

The Printmaking Workshop, a cooperative community workspace, grew from Robert Blackburn’s vision to create a place where artists, regardless of race, gender, religion, or socioeconomics, could work and exchange ideas.  Founded in 1948 at a time when even New York City was heavily segregated, his work formed the basis of what would become the ideal of an arts non-profit organization living up to the promise of America, and a model for the future NEA.  Upon the closing of the Printmaking Workshop in 2001, due to Blackburn’s ailing health and fiscal challenges, The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts took up the task of creating a new program with Blackburn as the Artistic Director.  Still operating today as a vibrant and open access studio, RBPMW remains as an oasis for artists from across the globe serving more than 8,000 people annually with is programing.

The talk will occur in two parts.  The first being an image rich presentation and the second a hands on look at physical prints. Geared towards artists and collectors as well as printmakers, approximately 1 hour.
