Asheville Chamber Music Series announces 2015-16 season

The upcoming season of the Asheville Chamber Music Series features performances by Ariel String Quartet, Fauré Quartett (Piano Quartet), American String Quartet, Doric String Quartet with pianist Jonathan Biss and the Harlem Quartet.

The Asheville Chamber Music Series (ACMS) will be presenting a distinguished roster of internationally acclaimed ensembles for its 2015-16 season, including the Ariel String Quartet, Fauré Quartett (Piano Quartet), American String Quartet, Doric String Quartet with pianist Jonathan Biss and the Harlem Quartet. A special concert to benefit the Asheville Chamber Music Series will feature Gary Hoffman, cello and Giles Vonsattel, piano. All concerts will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation located at the corner of Edwin Place and Charlotte Street in Asheville.

“We are looking forward to our 63rd season this year with another incredible roster of outstanding musicians and the opportunity to present our series in the newly expanded setting of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, our concert home,” says ACMS Presdent, Polly Feitzinger. “The newly designed sanctuary of the UU Congregation enables us to present larger ensembles and an expanded repertoire for the enjoyment of our audiences.”

ARIEL STRING QUARTET

Recently awarded the prestigious Cleveland Quartet Award, the Ariel String Quartet performs widely in North America, Europe and Israel, including two record-setting Beethoven cycles last season. The Ariel has collaborated with pianist Orion Weiss, violist Roger Tapping, cellist Paul Katz and the American Jerusalem String Quartets.

FAURÉ QUARTETT (Piano Quartet)

Brahms: Piano Quartet No. 2 in A major, Op. 26

After they met during their studies in 1995 in Karlsruhe for the 150 anniversary of Gabriel Fauré, they quickly realized that this combination offered new insights into undiscovered repertoire. In 2006, they signed a contract with Deutsche Grammophon. They made highly regarded benchmark-recordings with works by Mozart, Brahms and Mendelssohn. The ensemble was awarded the ECHO Classic for their album “Classic Beyond Borders,” their second after their recording of Brahms’ piano quartets. (Chamber music recording of the year in 2008).

Internationally recognized as one of the world’s foremost quartets, the American String Quartet celebrates its 40th season in 2015-16. The Quartet is also known for its performances of the complete quartets of Beethoven, Schubert, Schoenberg, Bartok and Mozart. The Quartet’s recordings of the complete Mozart string quartets on a matched set of Stradivarius instruments are widely held to set the standard for this repertoire.

Described by Gramophone as “one of the finest young string quartets,” the Doric String Quartet has emerged as the leading British string quartet amongst the new generation, receiving glowing responses from audiences and critics across the globe. Highlights of the 2013-14 season include return visits to the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and the Hamburg Laeiszhalle as well as three performances at the Wigmore Hall. Jonathan Biss has appeared with the foremost orchestras in the United States, including the Los Angeles and New York Philharmonics; the Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco Symphonies, and the Cleveland and Philadelphia Orchestras.

Since its public debut in 2006 at Carnegie Hall, the New York-based ensemble has performed throughout the U.S., as well as in France, the U.K., Belgium, Panama, Canada, and South Africa. Each member of the quartet is a seasoned solo artist, having appeared with such orchestras as the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Pops, and the Atlanta, Baltimore, Cleveland, Detroit, National, Utah, Puerto Rico, Juilliard, New World, and Pittsburgh symphony orchestras.

Special benefit concert for the Asheville Chamber Music Series – not part of subscription series will feature Gary Hoffman with Giles Vonsattel.

Gary Hoffman is one of the outstanding cellists of our time, combining instrumental mastery, great beauty of sound, and a poetic sensibility. Mr. Hoffman gained international renown upon his victory as the first North American to with the Rostropovich International Competition in Paris in 1986. A frequent soloist with the world’s most noted orchestras, he has appeared with the Chicago, London, Montreal, Toronto, San Francisco, Baltimore and national symphony orchestras as well as the English, Moscow and Los Angeles chamber orchestras, the Orchestre National de France, the Netherlands and Rotterdam Philharmonics, the Cleveland Orchestra and Philadelphia Orchestra.

For more than a half a century the ACMS has taken it’s place as a valued cultural resource in Asheville, bringing world-renowned chamber artists to the city. As one of the nation’s oldest continuous performing chamber music organizations, it has been recognized for its outstanding programs and for its unique education component through a collaboration with the strings program of the Asheville Buncombe Schools and our other cultural partners in the community, including the Asheville Young Musicians Club.
