Asheville City Council member Gordon Smith endorses Veronika Gunter for N.C. Senate

Full announcement from Asheville City Council member Gordon Smith:

City Councilman Gordon Smith endorsed NC Senate candidate Veronika Gunter today with these words, “Veronika Gunter is a woman who can carry forward the legacy of the late Sen. Martin Nesbitt. Veronika’s tenacity, intelligence, charm, and strategic thinking are exactly the characteristics we need to continue the fight for working families in Buncombe County and across North Carolina. She knows how to collaborate, how to communicate, how to fight, and how to win. I am proud to endorse my friend Veronika Gunter for the North Carolina Senate.”

Smith added, “Please join me in supporting this courageous woman in her bid to serve. She’s proven herself time after time, and I have no doubt she’ll do so again as Senator for North Carolina’s 49th District.”

The vacant seat will be filled on April 3 by the Buncombe County Democratic Party’s Executive Committee, of which Smith is a part. The event begins at 6pm in the new wing of the Buncombe County Courthouse, Room 1A. Voting members include all precinct chairs, vice chairs, State Executive Committee Members, Auxiliary Presidents, and Democratic elected officials who reside in District 49.

Gordon Smith is a member of Asheville City Council in his second term and a Child and Family Therapist in private practice. Smith has known Gunter for over twenty years.

    Yep. This is why City Council doesn’t want to move our municipal elections to a regular cycle. By having municipal elections in odd years, we effectively have a perpetual campaign season. Our leaders are reduced to cheerleading and never have the chance (or expectation) to actually lead. This is a huge reason that City Council is so ineffective. Constantly sizing up the political landscape.

    I would appreciate hearing Veronica’s views on Education in North Carolina. Also how would she work toward creating a bill and submit it for upgrading the basic core of Ehucation
