UPDATE: Asheville City Schools Near Erskine in Temporary Lockdown, Teen Injured with Gunshot Wound in Area

UPDATE, Sept. 2: Asheville Police detectives are continuing to investigate what appears to be an accidental shooting that occurred around 8 a.m. Thursday. Further investigation revealed the juvenile was shot inside of a residence in the Erskine area. The juvenile, a 14-year-old female, was treated and released from Mission Hospital.

APD would like to thank the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office and other local agencies that reached out and offered assistance.

When something occurs in our district, we want to keep you informed.

Safety is always Asheville City Schools top priority.

We have lifted the lockdown at Asheville High School, SILSA, and Asheville Middle School.

Students at the ACS Education and Career Academy were safely transported to Central Office, where they remained for a short period of time. They are in the process of being safely transported back to their campus.

Asheville High School, Asheville Middle School, and SILSA were placed on a perimeter lockdown today, Thursday, September 1  around 8:00 am before the school day even began.

During a perimeter lockdown, students remain in their classrooms or the next safest location.  Once we secured the perimeter we transitioned students to their first period classes under close supervision. Our lockdown plan worked exactly as anticipated.

The lockdown was lifted at 9:45 a.m. with support from the Asheville Police Department. All staff and students are safe and we will move through a regular scheduled school day.

Asheville City Schools is working with the Asheville Police Department in this investigation. We will keep you informed as we are able. There was an isolated incident that occurred near our campus. Please know that there is a lot of misinformation around this incident. We can confirm that the victim is in stable condition.

PREVIOUS, 8:58 a.m.: APD officers were dispatched to the area of Erskine Avenue at 8:01 a.m. where a juvenile had been shot.  The victim has been transported to Mission Hospital with serious injuries, but in stable condition.

Nearby schools are in lockdown as a precaution.

Detectives and Forensic investigators are on scene.
