Asheville City Schools to end all activities at 5 p.m. on Feb. 6

Press release from Asheville City Schools:

Please see below for communication that was shared with our students, staff and families:

By now, we think we’ll be able to remain at school for the rest of the day.

However, all after-school activities, including games, practices, meetings and enrichment programs across the district, will conclude today by 5:00 p.m. This does include our preschool classrooms.

We’ve made this decision with the safety of our high school drivers, staff and families in mind. Our hope is that you’ll all be safe at home before it gets dark and more rain hits.

Our Transportation Department will also be rerouting several bus stops due to the excessive flooding, ponding and road closures

Please pay special attention if your family lives in North Asheville or West Asheville.

For North Asheville, if your child rides bus 515, 631 or 626 and lives on Spooks Branch, Asbury or Wolf Cove, your students will be dropped off and picked up at the Beaverdam Fire Department. Our bus drivers on 32 and 643 are also unable to safely travel on Inglewood, Robinhood or Brookwood. Therefore, drivers will be dropping students off and picking them up at the entrance to Robinhood. All other stops on these routes will remain the same.

In West Asheville, buses 17, 55, 515, 623, 624, 635, 636, 640, 641, 642, 644, 645 may be running behind due to excessive ponding on roadways.

We will continue to monitor road conditions and keep you updated as new information is made available. Please know these changes will be in effect both this afternoon and tomorrow morning, Friday, Feb. 7.

Additionally, please know that regardless of what bus your student rides on, our drivers across the district will be using their best judgment. If they believe it’s unsafe to drop off a student due to flooding, the student will be brought back to school. An administrator will remain on campus until all buses return.

Thank you, and please let me know if you have any questions.
