Asheville educator selected for Governor’s Teacher Network

Press release from Evergreen Community Charter School:

Fourth-grade teacher Jeanne McCabe Curtis was selected to participate in the Governor’s Teacher Network, (GTN) a Race to the Top-funded initiative operated in partnership by the Office of Governor Pat McCrory and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

Curtis, who teaches at Evergreen Community Charter School, was selected based on her proposal outlining her teaching strategies that promote a growth mindset in student mathematicians and aim to engage all students with differentiated activities that teach Common Core content and practice standards.

GTN was established to encourage educators from across the state to develop and share best practices around classroom instruction and professional development for teachers. The process for selecting network teachers was based on the depth and quality of their prior experience, the ability to provide resources for identified priority areas, and the strength and quality of the proposed scope of work plan and sample items that were submitted.

“I’m so excited for this opportunity,” said Curtis. “I love teaching math, and I hope I can inspire others with my ideas.  I look forward to working with and learning from teachers across the state.”

Curtis will receive $10,000 over the course of the 2014-2015 school-year to provide professional development to North Carolina public school teachers through Home Base and school Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). Upon completion, her professional decvelopment plans will become part of the state Professional Learning Network (PLN).
