Asheville Parks & Rec announces indoor programming as winter approaches

Cooler temperatures are coming quickly to our mountains — but that doesn’t mean parks programming and activities are slowing down. Check out these indoor recreation and athletic opportunities through the fall and winter.

Climbing wall at Tempie Avery Montford Center
Looking for an activity that will strengthen your muscles, improve your flexibility and challenge your cardiovascular system? Indoor climbing is for you! The Tempie Avery Montford Center is home to a 20-foot-tall climbing wall suitable for all ages and skill levels.

Learn 2 Climb Classes for ages 7-12 are available this fall (limited number) — but look for more opportunities at the wall after the holidays.

Fitness centers
Did you know you can use facility fitness centers for free? Fitness centers include cardio equipment, free weights and more at Stephens-Lee and Shiloh. At Stephens-Lee, childcare for school-age children is available on Tuesdays, 6 – 8 p.m. while parents use the fitness facilities.

Linwood Crump Shiloh Community Center is at 121 Shiloh Road, 828-274-7739.

9 a.m. – 8:30 p.m.

9 a.m. – 8 p.m.

9 a.m. – 6 p.m

Stephens-Lee Community Center is at 30 George Washington Carver Avenue, 828-350-2058. Fitness center hours:

Wednesday and Friday, 9:30 a.m. – 9 p.m.

Thursday – 9:30 a.m. – 8 p.m.

8 a.m. – 2 p.m.

noon – 4 p.m.

Sports Athletic Leagues
Opportunities include youth and adult basketball, adult volleyball, indoor disc golf putt league, badminton and table tennis! Find information on youth athletics at this link. Find information on adult athletics at this link.

Harvest House
Active aging is good for the body, mind and soul. Harvest House offers a wide variety of classes including contemporary line dancing, international folk dancing and slimnastics. If dancing isn’t your interest, Harvest House also has a woodworking shop, a clay studio, a weaving studio and open billiards hours as well as open darts hours.
